BALANZA COMERCIAL Ante la constatación de que el mercado nacional es muy reducido y que el potencial productivo del sector silvoagropecuario es muy alto y diversificado, el país optó por una amplia apertura al comercio internacional, rebajando unilateralmente sus aranceles y firmando acuerdos de libre comercio con múltiples países y zonas. Producto de esta estrategia se ha generado un gran crecimiento de las exportaciones sectoriales y pese al aumento de las importaciones, la balanza comercial se ha mantenido históricamente positiva. BALANZA COMERCIAL NACIONAL Y SECTORIAL EN MILLONES DE DÓLARES DE CADA AÑO DOMESTIC AND SECTORAL BALANCE (MILLIONS DOLLARS EACH YEAR) A. TRADE BALANCE Given the fact that the domestic market is small relative to the productive potential of the agricultural, livestock and forestry sector, the country adopted an open economy approach to trade, with low levels of border protections and signing free trade agreements (FTAs) with multiple countries and zones. This strategy has contributed to a dynamic export- oriented farm sector, with a consistent positive balance of agricultural trade.
