Debido a que el sector forestal chileno ha basado su desarrollo en un modelo exportador, la certificación se ha instaurado principalmente por la demanda de mercados de destino frente a las exigencias de una mayor sostenibilidad en el desarrollo de las industrias y sus proveedores. Forestry certification is a mechanism that accredits a series of activities under certain principles and guidelines, developed according to a predefined time and geographic scale. These are then monitored and verified by an independent third party. Given that the growth of the Chilean forestry sector is based on an export model, certification has been instituted primarily by the demand of target markets, to strive for higher levels of sustainability in the development of the industries and their providers.
